Laser Hair Removal
If you are unhappy or bored with shaving, tweezing, or waxing to remove unwanted hair, laser hair removal may be an option for you. Men and women often wish to have hair-free areas on their body. Dr. Mirabile, Dr. Hsu, and Dr. Taglienti have cutting-edge medical laser technology to effectively treat these areas with minimal discomfort and maximum efficacy. Hair can be removed from any area of the body utilizing our Palomar laser. It may take several treatments, but hair, for the most part, will be largely removed. Sometimes after the hair removal process is complete, patients will require one annual treatment to avoid re-growth. Laser hair removal is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic procedures in the United States. The procedure involves beaming highly concentrated light into hair follicles. The pigment in the follicles absorbs the light, which destroys the hair. Lasers are used to remove unwanted hair from the face, leg, arm, underarm, bikini line, and other areas.
Benefits of laser hair removal include:
The Palomar Laser uses extreme precision, targeting dark and coarse hair while leaving the surrounding skin unharmed and undamaged. The process of laser hair removal itself is quick. Each second, the laser treats an area the size of a quarter. Smaller areas, such as the upper lip, can be treated in less than a minute, and large areas, such as the back or legs, can be completed in one hour.
Laser hair removal treatments are also very reliable; 90% of patients have long-term hair loss from just 3-5 sessions.
How to Prepare for Laser Hair Removal
Six weeks before undergoing laser hair removal, it is advised that you limit plucking, waxing, and electrolysis. Because these hair removal methods remove the roots of the hair follicles, they should not be performed, since the laser needs to target hair follicles for effective treatment.
It is important for patients to avoid sun exposure 6 weeks prior to the treatment and 6 weeks after. Sun exposure lessens the effects of the laser treatment and makes complications more likely.
What to Expect During Laser Hair Removal
Before the laser treatment is performed, the hair in the targeted area will be trimmed so that it is just a small distance from surface of the skin. Once this is done, the laser settings can be adjusted to the specific color and thickness of your hair, as well as to location and skin type. Some lasers or light sources require the use of eye protection for the treatment. In addition to eye protection, a cold gel or a cooling device will be provided for your safety. This cold gel or cooling device will protect the outer layer of your skin, and it will also help the laser light penetrate into your skin for a more effective procedure.
After this is done, the technician will test the settings of the laser on your skin by giving you a pulse of light and then monitoring the area for a few minutes to check for any reactions prior to proceeding with treatment.
At the completion of your procedure, there are multiple ways we can ease any discomfort you may be feeling. You will be given ice packs, anti-inflammatory creams, or lotions to soothe the treated skin. Patients can schedule their appointment for their next treatment four to six weeks after their initial treatment. The patient will undergo treatment until the hair stops growing.
